Tech Talk Extra

This item originally appeared in the October 7, 2004 issue of The Tech Talk.

A blocked extra point has Tech's football team down 21-20 to the Fresno State University Bulldogs with five minutes and forty-two seconds remaining in the game.

Tech is on the verge of pulling off one of the biggest upsets in school history and knocking off No. 17 nationally ranked Fresno State.

Tech's gritty, hard-nosed defense has buckled down and held Fresno State's offense to one touchdown since the first quarter, and the opportunity arises for another valiant stand against a high-powered offense.

It's third down and five yards to go on the Fresno State 26-yard line with 4:15 on the clock and Tech down one point.

Suddenly, a sea of blue roars across Joe Aillet Stadium, and a thunderous wave of applause claps loudly, as 18,330 fans stand in anticipation of a climactic ending.

Fresno State's quarterback Paul Pinegar drops back to pass and delivers a bullet downfield that would have been good for a first down, but Tech's Byron Santiago intercepts the pass and rumbles 16 yards to Fresno State's 16-yard line.

The boisterous crowd explodes with excitement as Tech's halfback Ryan Moats and the offense trot onto the field.

Sweaty palms, racing heartbeats and the crashing sea of blue reveals the intensity of this moment.

Energy pulsates through the crowd like lightning across a clear midnight sky.

After one eight-yard run, Moats electrifies the entire stadium with an eight-yard touchdown dash, and the following two-point conversion from Matt Kubik to Eric Newman gives Tech a 28-21 advantage.

In desperate measure Fresno State drives down to Tech's 20-yard line with first and 10 yards to go and 1:03 on the clock -- the upset seemingly in jeopardy.

Tech's coaches and players pump up the crowd. The band jams fans with adrenaline, and the student section yells, "Shock 'em 'Dogs!"

With a powerful force shaking the very foundations of the stadium, the deafening crowd ignites and juices the Bulldog defensive core for one of the biggest plays ever witnessed at Joe Aillet Stadium.

Pinegar steps back and throws a pass to an open receiver down the line of scrimmage, but Tech's cornerback Tramon Williams dives in front of the receiver and cradles the ball for the game-winning interception.

The sea of blue erupts and blankets the field with a sweeping rush, as Tech has bravely defended its home and burst Fresno State's BCS bid.

Goalposts are no match for a maddening crowd, and both sets of posts crash to the ground as students ride them like bulls.

And this is exactly the environment our Bulldog football team and Tech sports need.

Here is a football team that didn't quit and gutted it out for 60 minutes against a bruising, high-powered Fresno State squad, and we need the same spirit and enthusiasm at every game.

It's time for Tech fans to get excited about Bulldog football and all Tech sports.

Tech has a direct path to another Western Athletic Conference championship, with the exception of a large speed bump in Boise, Idaho, and now is the time for this school and community to rise to the occasion and become the passionate, die-hard fans our team needs.

Every student should wear blue on Fridays, and this community should deck out in blue.

Continue the intensity felt in the battle against Fresno State, and relive the moment in every home game.

After trips to Auburn and SMU, the Bulldogs will be back at home for a contest against the UTEP Miners on Oct. 23 at 2 p.m.

Deck out as a smurf, enjoy tasty tailgating, go buck wild at the game and support your Bulldog football team in a win against UTEP.
