Jumper cables? Jack? Flashlight? Wrench?

What do you carry in your car for emergencies?

Being prepared for the unpredictable is what makes a bad situation not worse. Some things are must-haves when dealing with what to carry in a car.

“I never know what could happen,” Lauren Brown, a sophomore marketing major, said.

She said she is very prepared for any car-related situations that could occur.

Brown keeps a tire gauge in her car to check the pressure.

“I love them,” she said, referring to the gauge and the other kits in her car. She said she is proud of her many tools and necessities she has accumulated over the years.

Brown said she also keeps warm blankets, bottles of water and a Bible in her car. She even keeps a spare toothbrush.

“I have two emergency kits in my car,” Brown said.

She said she knows that it is important to be prepared for accidents.

Tech mechanic Wynne Riser suggested drivers keep jumper cables in their cars. He also said that “drivers need to check the air in spare tires” and buy the small car emergency kits.

The Road and Travel Magazine Web site, http://www.roadandtravel.com, also offered suggestions for items to keep in a car. According to the Web site, drivers should keep working cell phones in a car and a flashlight with extra batteries.

Jessica Harding, a senior speech communication major, said water is important to keep in her car. She said she also has some personal necessities.

“I keep my [compact discs] and a tennis racquet in my car,” Harding said.

Harding said she keeps forgetting to put food in her car.

“I need it for when I go to and from school,” she said.

Students can even be prepared for the less tragic accidents that happen inside of cars. Some incidents are minor but could leave lasting marks. A soda could explode in a car, or a passenger could get car sick.

Jamie Frazier, a junior speech communication major, said she keeps “tons of napkins in [her] car in case of spills.” Frazier said she often forgets to put gas in her car, but she continues to keep clothes and body spray in it.

Frazier said she would recommend to anyone who has a car to have plenty of napkins.

“When I don’t have them, that’s when I need them the most,” she said.
