Walks in life are generally for a purpose, whether it is to a destination, for exercise or a cause.
The Delta Sigma Pi's charity volunteer work at "America's Walk for Diabetes" on Oct. 2 in Shreveport was for public service.
"The brothers of our fraternity do charity work within our community to benefit those less fortunate," Elizabeth McVay, president of Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity and a senior business management and entrepreneurship major, said.
"The Diabetes Walk in Shreveport was a chance for us to give back to the community."
Tobais Avante, chairman of the volunteer board for the program, said the walk's purpose was to raise money to benefit those with diabetes.
Money for research stays in Louisiana with three researchers at LSUS Medical Center, Avante said.
"Those who walk and volunteer are of great service and if it wasn't for their volunteer effort, fund-raisers like this one could never be accomplished," Avante said.
He also said the Delta Sigma Pi's were a tremendous asset to the fund-raiser.
"They helped with everything including cheerleading, moving water, putting up signs, registration, logistics and maintaining a spirited attitude the entire time," Avante said.
Jessica Lauritsen, vice-president of community service for Delta Sigma Pi and a junior marketing major, said the members of her fraternity were happy to help in any way.
"We did a little bit of everything to make the walk a success and enjoyed cheering the walkers on to the finish line," Lauritsen said.
Lauritsen said the fraternity has a minimum of six service activities a year and tries to accomplish 10.
"We just try to better our community through volunteer work," Lauritsen said.
Lauritsen said in November, Delta Sigma Pi will volunteer with the Northeast Louisiana Food Bank.
It distributes various supplies such as non-perishable food items to the elderly.
Lauritsen said Delta Sigma Pi really enjoyed working the event and will continue to help causes like this throughout the year .
"We hope to be stuffing stockings this Christmas for various children's organizations in December," she said.
Avante said the group did not make their projected goal this year.
"We did produce over $50,000 to benefit research for diabetes," Avante said. "We would appreciate more organizations and students from Tech to volunteer and help make next year's a complete success."
