Homecoming is just around the corner, and Greeks have
prepared for a big week.
McKinna Dartez,
Panhellenic President and a senior professional
aviation major, said Homecoming week is important for Greeks.
“It is the biggest week for us to show our school spirit
and give back to Tech,” Dartez said. “It is a great
opportunity every year for us to show our love for our school.”
She said every year Homecoming week showcases the Greeks
as Tech’s most supportive organizations.
“You will always see all the sororities and fraternities
at the football game and the pep rally,” she said.
This year, for the first time, the Panhellenic
Council and the Intrafraternity Council held a
cookout in the quad.
“It was supposed to be a surprise cookout for all Panhellenic and IFC members,” she said. “It is our first
year, and we’re really excited about doing it.”
Klark Kent, IFC president and a
junior professional aviation major, said Homecoming week usually has major
Greek involvement.
“We expect[ed] a major turnout for the Unity Step Show
and for Paint the Town,” he said. “We know everyone will show up for the game.”
Greek Alley will play host to Greek tailgaters again
during Homecoming week, but this week will be a special one, Kent said.
“There will be such a great turnout for the game, and so
many of the Greeks will be there to tailgate,” Kent said. “It will be a lot of
fun.”
Another bonus of Homecoming week at Greek Alley is
singer-songwriter Monty Russell will play before Saturday’s game, Dartez said.
Dr. Dee Dee Anderson, dean of
student development, said another activity during Homecoming week is the return
of alumni.
“An important aspect of Homecoming week for the Greeks is
the opportunity for the actives to meet with the alumni,” she said. “It gives
them a chance to show the progress they have made.”
The Homecoming Court is another important issue
surrounding the week.
“It’s so exciting to me that every year the majority of
the students on the ballot are Greek,” Dartez said.
“It just shows how Greeks are involved and how we can make a difference.”
The fact that Greeks make up the major of the court
proves that Greek life has accomplished some of its goals, Dartez
said.
She said, “It goes to show that being Greek teaches
leadership, how to give back to your school and how to give back to your
community.”
