Tech’s spirit groups are collaborating to bring the
alumni a special show at the Homecoming pep rally at 10 p.m. tomorrow night in
the Thomas Assembly Center.
Jennifer Canterbury, coordinator of the spirit groups and
a Tech alumna, said the groups have extra and joint practices to prepare for
the pep rally.
“They take the extra time to choreograph a special
routine for an extra special pep rally,” Canterbury said.
She also said there is much going on during the routine.
“The crowd really enjoys watching it because there’s a
lot to see at one time,” Canterbury said. “There are high-flying stunts,
tumbling and dancing.”
Steven Ehrhard, captain of the co-ed cheerleading squad
and a senior education major, is leading the groups in the performance at the
pep rally.
“It’s something we do together,” Ehrhard said. “We’ll mix
[the squads] to do a three to four minute routine.”
He said the pep rally is a fun event for everyone from
students to alumni.
“This is to get the crowd crazy and ready for the
Homecoming game,” Ehrhard said. “The student body enjoys watching it and we
enjoy putting it on.”
Ann Marie Kees, a junior early elementary education, said
this performance is special for Homecoming.
“[The routine] make this pep rally unique and Homecoming
is known for larger performance,” Kees said.
Kyle Falting, a member of the co-ed cheerleading squad
and a senior education major, said the special routine serves a purpose for the
university and the student body.
“I think it adds a lot of energy to the pep rally,”
Falting said. “It gives the students something to get excited about.”
Falting said the Homecoming pep rally will be good for
the squads as well as the students.
“It’s just the one time of year that all three spirit
groups come together and do something as one organization,” Falting said.
“It gives a chance for us to showcase talents and
abilities as a whole and as individual spirit groups. It’s good for [the
students] to see that we put a lot of hard time into [the routine].”
Chasity Albritton, a member of the varsity co-ed
cheerleading squad and a junior marketing major, said the teams will have extra
practices.
“It’s going to be really tough because we’re going to be
practicing our routines too,” Albritton said.
“We’ve got to practice with the other groups, and we’re
still practicing [our stunts].”
Victoria Zeringue, co-captain of the Regal Blues and a
kinesiology and health promotion major, said the Homecoming routines are better
for performance.
“I think that at the regular pep rally, we all do our own
thing and there are breaks between [each performance],” Zeringue said. “It’s
like the Energizer Bunny, it keeps going and going and going.”
