The Student Government Association is offering students
affected by Hurricane Katrina funds to assist them with their education at
Tech.
Lindsay Mencacci, president of
SGA and a senior biology major said the applications will be available in the
SGA office located in Tolliver Hall and also can be found on www.latech.edu/tech/orgs/sga/.
Applications are due Nov. 10 at 5 p.m.
“The university foundation collects money from donors and
then they donate that money to a certain area, and then that area divvies out
the money,” Mencacci said.
“SGA was chosen to have the job of dividing out the funds
to the students affected by the hurricane.”
Mencacci said the SGA has
around $20,000 for student scholarships.
“We will divide out the funds based on need and how many
students fill out an application,” she said. “Scholarship recipients will be
notified and funds will be available on November 14. Funds will be applied
directly to the student’s account summary.”
Mencacci said the SGA formed a
committee which will help decide which students will receive the scholarships.
Christopher Watson, a member of SGA and a senior
biomedical and electrical engineering major, is also on the committee that will
decide which student obtains the funds.
“My family and I were directly affected by Hurricane
Katrina,” Watson said. “For this reason, I wanted to have some impact on how
the money was divided and used for each student.”
Watson said students who were affected by the hurricane
should be allowed to receive help.
“This is a natural disaster and should not affect a
student’s education,” Watson said. “I hope this money will help students pay
for books, tuition or any other educational costs.”
Cazerrick “CJ” Johnson, vice
president of SGA and a junior political science major, thinks the scholarships
will help a lot of students out who were affected by the hurricane.
“Many students do not have the money to pay after being
affected by the hurricane,” Johnson said. “It is very important that the SGA is
involved because we are the voice of the students so any concerns of the
students are a concern of ours.”
