Tech students may be too old
for trick-or-treating, but they are
sure to find some frightening fun
this week whether they stay in or
go out.
Those opting to stay in this All
Hallows Eve may hit the local
movie rental store for a night filled
with petrifying films.
Kristy Cannon, store manager
at Blockbuster, located at 1516 N.
Trenton St., said in the five years
she has worked for Blockbuster,
students seem to come back year
after year for the classics.
“[‘Nightmare on Elm Street’],
[‘Child’s play’] and ‘Halloween’
are the main ones that will rent the
best,” Cannon said. “Students just
follow the cult classics.”
Cannon said students rent horror
films on Halloween so they can
“turn off the lights, have fun with
friends and scare the crap out of
each other.”
Cannon said horror flick fans
are already preparing for their
night of terror that will compel
them sleep with the lights on, by
checking up on the most highly
anticipated films such as the
“Dawn of the Dead” remake.
Erinton Savoie, a freshman
finance major, said his favorite
movies are “Friday the 13th” and
the newer version of “The Texas
Chainsaw Massacre.”
Savoie said ever since he was
little, “Friday the 13th” gave him
that indescribable feeling of horror,
and he said he can now relate
that feeling to the remake of the
film that chronicles the brutal slayings
of five teenagers in Texas.
“It’s just scary,” Savoie said.
“Just the feeling of being so isolated
and your friends being killed
one by one by a psycho.”
For those who don’t want to
simply watch a horror unfold, a
variety of community events will
attract ghouls and goblins on the
hunt for a little Halloween mischief
this week.
Tech athletics kicked off Halloween
with the 5th Annual Halloween
Carnival Monday at J.C.
Love baseball field.
The sports teams manned
booths that provided face-painting,
bobbing for apples and much
more.
The Chamber of Commerce
will put on a Fall Carnival and
Chili Cook-off from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
today at the Ruston Civic Center,
located at 401 N. Trenton St., with
the help of members of Tech’s
chapter of the Sigma Nu fraternity.
Will Erwin, commander of the
Sigma Nus and a junior business
major, said his fraternity will participate
in the carnival to provide
community service.v
“We will help out in four twohour
shifts,” Erwin said. “We’ll
take a bunch of guys up there and
run a couple of the booths.”
Tonight Russtown Society’s
Annual Pumpkin Fest Carnival
and Annual Terror on James Street
Haunted House will be held.
For all the late-nighters, Sundown
West Tavern, located at 111
W. Park Ave., will sponsor a costume
contest and a band, the Lightening
Bugs, Saturday night all for
a cover of $5.
