Memorial Gym echoed with the earsplitting stomps of students stepping to the beat in The Unity Step Show on Oct. 20.

The Unity Step Show, hosted by the Minority Council and Student Government Association, had a huge turnout during Homecoming week at Tech.

"The crowd [at the Step Show] was awesome because they were so supportive of one another," Rachel Stowell, a participant in the show for Kappa Delta Sorority and a freshman merchandising and consumer science major, said.

Ashley McGarity, director of SGA student affairs and a junior biology major, said the Unity Step Show is a Homecoming event put on each year during Homecoming week to bring unity between campus organizations and students.

The first part of the show had two members from each organization performing in the opening step number.

The organizations that participated in the event were, in order of appearance: Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Phi Mu Sorority, Kappa Delta Sorority, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Sigma Kappa Sorority and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Participants said they enjoyed performing.

"Participating in the step show is such an exciting experience," Kelsey Rogers, a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority and a senior accounting major, said.

Stowell said she agrees with Rogers about the great feeling of performing.

"It was really great to get the amazing feedback from the audience while I was on stage," Stowell said.

"All those hours of practice were worth it."

The women said that it was not only the dancing that made the Unity Step Show great, but also the fun of getting together.

"The step show is a small part of the fun sororities have when they get together," Rogers said.

McGarity said organizations having fun together and with other organizations is part of the unity the Minority Council and the SGA are striving for.

Katherine Fuller, a member of Kappa Delta Sorority and a sophomore accounting major, said, "Without the Unity Step Show, the different organizations would not get a chance to feed off one another. Being a part of the show gives us that special opportunity."

Fuller said it is the unity of the whole school that makes the show so perfect. "This university can't have unity without diversity."
