Fitting in on a college campus is daunting for many freshmen, but Frank Williams, a freshman computer science major, found his niche.
Williams defeated P.J. Graham, a freshman political science major, in a runoff for freshman class president in a 48-39 vote with 95 percent of the freshman class not voting Oct. 20. Balloting was held in front of the CEnIT.
"I am truly surprised I won," Williams said. "I didn't have the materials that everyone else had. I just tried to do the best I could with what I had."
Williams said those around him compelled him to run.
"I was class vice president in high school, and I thought if I can do it in high school I could do it in college," Williams said.
"I wanted to do something no one in my family has done and do it a little bigger than anyone expected."
Williams said he took a more proactive approach leading up to the runoff and credits that with earning him his victory.
"I talked to three university seminar classes and asked them to vote and get other people to vote," Williams said. "Whenever I talked to people, if they weren't going to vote, I just wanted them to vote, period."
