A professor in the department of biomedical engineering has been recognized for his contributions to the biomedical engineering program.

Dr. Paul Hale, associate dean of external programs with the College of Engineering and Science, received the Distinguished Service Award from the Biomedical Engineering Society on Oct. 2.

"I've been very active in BMES, serving on the Board of Directors and other capacities. For the last 13 years, I've been involved in the accreditation process of biomedical engineering in academic areas," Hale said.

Hale said although the biomedical engineering program is about 40 years old, he has been assisting BMES to become the leading society for the recognition for biomedical engineering academic programs.

"I assisted them in their application and helped direct and work it through the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology," Hale said.

Along with his work with BMES, Hale also serves as a professor of biomedical engineering and an academic director for the electrical engineering and computer science departments.

"I've worked at Tech for 34 years, and we have an excellent student body and an excellent faculty. Our education environment allows students to be very successful," Hale said.

Arlene Hill, office coordinator for electrical engineering, electrical engineering technology and computer science programs, said Hale earned his award.

"I think the award is very well deserved," Hill said. "Dr. Hale is very energetic and very conscientious about his responsibilities. He has a definite focus and direction that impresses me. I think he takes those same attributes to each program or project he is involved with."

Hale said he enjoys being involved at the university.

"My interests include how I can contribute to students and faculty and help them achieve their career goals and be successful," Hale said. "All of us have roles to play in moving our profession to the next level, and it is quite an honor for me to be recognized by the Biomedical Engineering Society."
