Louisiana Tech's E.J. Bellocq Gallery and the School of Art Gallery are showcasing some of Louisiana's visual and reality arts through Dec. 12 at an exhibition for the Louisiana Purchase Bicentennial celebration.
The exhibition showcases several pieces, including abstract art represented in a variety of art forms like painting, photography, sculpture, installation and mix media.
This range of both reality and abstract art was created by nine artists selected from across the state.
The artists included are Michael Crespo and Kelli Scott Kelley from Baton Rouge; Jan Gilbert, Mary Jane Parker and Jeremy Jernegan from New Orleans; Laura Noland-Harter, Pearl Sabanic and Donna Service from Shreveport; and Deborah Luster from Monroe.
Marie Bukowski, an assistant professor of art, said the reason for selecting artists of different specialties is to show the diversity of art forms that exist.
"People should expect to see a variety of works that basically would encompass a wide range of art mediums and styles," Bukowski said.
Bukowski also said the exhibition allows the artists to showcase the originality of their imaginations.
"We just want to highlight Louisiana artists and see the different ideas they can present," Bukowski said.
Dean Dablow, a professor of art, said the School of Art is pleased to sponsor the exhibit commemorating the bicentennial.
Dablow also said it is an opportunity for people to come and see some of the best works of the state.
"It's an honor to have Louisiana artists' exhibit in Louisiana Tech," Dablow said.
The event started Sunday with a public reception and will continue for the next six weeks.
Admission to the event is free and the hours for the gallery exhibit are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.
Schools and groups are also welcome to attend the event.
Bukowski said she encourages all people to attend the exhibition and also to come with interest and open minds in order to enjoy the show.
