A.E. Phillips Laboratory School, located on Hergot Avenue., will recognize and honor veterans from all branches of the Armed Forces with a Veteran's Day program from 1:15 to 2:15 p.m. tomorrow in the school's gym.
Dr. Carynn Wiggins, principal of A.E. Phillips Lab School, said the program is meant to honor veterans and encourage patriotism in students as well as in the community.
"[Students] will take more from it than any class they are taking," Wiggins said.
"They will gain a historical perspective they would not have without the program."
Wiggins said Dr. Libby Manning's fifth-grade class will sponsor the event and sing a song to represent each branch of the Armed Forces.
Manning, a fifth-grade teacher, has coordinated the Veteran's Day program since A.E. Phillips Lab School began participating in the event four years ago.
"The celebration is focused on letters home from members of the Armed Forces from the Revolutionary War until today," Manning said.
Manning said the program is to appreciate and give thanks to area veterans of all branches of the military.
Jordan Crume, a student in Manning's fifth-grade class, will participate in the event by acting as one of the narrators in the program and by acting in a skit.
"The skit is about the importance of our veterans," Crume said.
"It is about how we should honor and respect them, too."
Crume said her class has been working on the program for about three weeks and every student in the class has a part in it.
Crume also said she knows people with loved ones who have fought in a war.
"They don't feel good about them being away, but they feel good about what they are doing."
