After two weeks of discussion, the purchase of a six-seat golf cart was approved by the Student Government Association on Tuesday.

This six-seat golf cart will be used by the student escort service and for events such as Homecoming.

"The SGA has purchased all but one golf cart for the past ten years," Tech Police Chief Stephen Quinnelly said.

Quinnelly said the escort service is one of their most popular services.

He has received many requests that the police consider having a six-seater instead of a four-seater.

"Over the years as golf carts wore out, we've gone to the SGA and asked for assistance in getting another golf cart so we can continue the program because it is an item that is not in our normal state budget," Quinnelly said.

Quinnelly also said this golf cart will offer better service to the students.

He assures everyone that the golf carts will be strictly used for escort services, Quinnelly said

"We don't write parking tickets out of the golf carts," Quinnelly said. "The deal I have made with the first SGA president who bought us our first golf cart is if the SGA is willing to buy the golf cart, then I pledge to you that it will not be used to write parking tickets."

Taylor Simpson, a graduate student in biomedical engineering, said he supports the escort service and would approve this bill.

However, the main question lies in whether a six-seat golf cart is really needed to escort a group of four students.

"It is an escort service, not a cab service," Simpson said. "It is a huge chunk of money taken out from the fund."

Of the three gas golf carts Tech Police currently has, one is not in working condition. This addition will help retire the faulty golf cart.
