Look out, Tech. Lambda Sigma Society is looking to get involved.
Rachel Guy, a sophomore biology major, said she is excited about Lambda Sigma and its upcoming events, which will further impact campus and the community.
"Lambda Sigma is a sophomore honors society whose main focus is community service in addition to keeping up students' grade point average," Guy said.
Guy said the organization has intentions of continuing the legacy of Lambda Sigma.
"Lambda Sigma has been prominent in the past," Guy said.
"They did a lot with Tech and the community of Ruston. We will continue that with emphasis on overlooked groups who do not have a campus organization focusing on them."
Guy said Lambda Sigma stands out as an organization because of its emphasis on building cohesion of its members in addition to participating in community service.
"The honors society has a special bond because all of its members are selected," Guy said. "We encourage our members to build friendships they will have for the rest of their life."
Upcoming events include a Bowl-A-Thon on Friday at the Kennel, an unannounced event in December and a professor-of-the-week program.
Guy said Lambda Sigma membership is offered at a significant time in students' college career.
"Things start to take off during your sophomore year," Guy said. "You start thinking about what you want to do for the rest of your life."
Taryn Branson, treasurer of Lambda Sigma and a sophomore political science major, said Lambda Sigma's goal for this year is to make sure the organization is well known on campus.
"We want to get the freshmen to know about Lambda Sigma," Branson said.
"It is a prestigious organization that many want to be involved with when they are sophomores."
For Tiffany McAllister, a freshman undecided major, Lambda Sigma was an organization she was interested in, although she had not heard much about it.
"I'd consider it because an honors society is a good thing to be a part of," McAllister said. "I also enjoy helping out my community."
Freshmen with a minimum 3.0 GPA are invited to join Lambda Sigma, Guy said. The selected freshmen who turn in an application are interviewed; approximately 50 freshmen are then selected to become members of the honor society.
Branson said Tech can help out Lambda Sigma in reaching its goals.
"Just look out for posters and show up at our events and support us."
