The men of Theta Pi chapter of Phi Beta Sigma, Inc.,
hosted “Sigma Week,” where the fraternity had a poetry reading, Halloween party
and male auction and welcomed new members.
Donald Washington, a Phi Beta Sigma and a junior
accounting major, said every school year the majority of Tech organizations
host a week filled with events.
“During our week we had numerous events planned for each
day, and everyone was invited to attend,” Washington said.
Washington said his group started the week by going to
church at Christ Temple in Grambling Oct. 23.
The next day the group had an event where the students
were able to showcase poetry and singing talents.
“Open mic and poetry night was
open to everyone; we had a good turn out and a lot of good talent,” Washington
said.
DeQuinton Harrison, a member of
Phi Beta Sigma and a graduate student of education, said Oct. 25 the group
hosted Sigma Movie Night in the Planetarium.
“We showed ‘Amityville Horror’ for our movie to keep with
the theme of Halloween,” Harrison said.
Harrison said the night of Oct. 26 night
was the time to party.
“We had a Halloween party in the Student Center, [and]
some people even showed up in costumes,” Harrison said.
Harrison said the party was set up to further celebrate
Halloween and enjoy music.
“We just felt the students would want to come and listen
to some music and dance,” Harrison said.
Harrison said the group had a male auction Thursday in
Adams Residence Hall Parlor to introduce members of the group to other
fraternities and sororities.
“The males were auctioned off to the highest bidder, and
the bidder chose the activity that the person would have to perform,” Harrison
said.
During the auction, the members of the fraternity had the
opportunity to dance and show off their bodies so that the bidders would bid
more on them.
“The guys have to do whatever the winning bidder wants
them to do as long as it’s not too outrageous of a request,” Harrison said.
Brendan Banks, a member of Phi Beta Sigma and a junior
health and physical education major, said the fraternity welcomed two new
members to the fraternity last Friday.
“We had a probate, which introduces the newest fraternity
brothers and showcases their stepping talents,” Banks said.
After the probate, the group had a step show that
included the new members, and the older members joined in to show support.
“Other fraternities and sororities joined in doing their
own dancing and stepping which was cool because we love the competition,” Banks
said.
Banks said to finish off the week, the fraternity had a
day of tailgating at Tech’s football game last Saturday.
Banks said, “We had a tent set up in Greek Alley and also
cooked barbecue.”
