Center to teach business skills at two-hour workshop Tuesday

Want to start a business?...

The Small Business Development Center will present the Business Basics WorkshopÊat 6 p.m. Tuesday in the College of Administration and Business Building, Room 203.

Topics in the workshop will include motivation and goals for business ownership, market analysis and marketing plans, sources of funding for small business and preparing financial statements.

The session will last two hours. Attendance and preparation of some basic information is necessary to receive counseling or assistance from the SBDC.

The workshop is free; however, students must register at least a day before.

All majors are welcome.

Departments to conduct forum, celebrate Black History Month

In observance of Black History Month, Tech's journalism and history departments and Grambling State University's history and geography departments will sponsor a forum titled, "Resistance and Empowerment: Black Politics in Northern Louisiana during the Civil Rights Era."

This event will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Wyly Tower of Learning Auditorium.

The panel will play host to civil rights pioneers from Ruston, Grambling, Jonesboro and surrounding areas who will share their stories.

Everyone is invited to attend, and the show is free to the public and students.

Fraternity sponsors step show, party to follow festivities today

Members of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. will put on a step show and after party at 8:14 p.m. today in the Student Center, Rooms 222-224.

The fraternity is putting the exhibition together as a collective effort in support of Black History Month and will involve seven fraternities and sororities on Tech campus.

There is a $3 charge for the step show and after party and a $4 fee for those who only wish to attend the after party.

Ministry to offer refreshments Wednesday for winter cookout

Students looking for some winter cookout fun need to look no further than the Baptist Collegiate Ministry Campus Cookout.

Hot dogs and refreshments are on the menu from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday in Centennial Plaza.

All students are invited to stop by and pick up free food.

Whether students are on the way to class or just tired of the cafeteria, they can take the sidewalk past the Clock Tower and grab a meal on-the-go.

Musical ensemble to showcase singing at local church tonight

The University Concert Choir and Chamber Singers will present their Winter Concert at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the sanctuary of Trinity United Methodist Church, located at 1000 Woodward Ave.

The program will contain music from several different time periods and is free to students with a Tech ID.

Selections for the evening include "How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place" from Brahms' "Deutsche Requiem" and "Walk Him Up" from "Purlie."

Student and faculty soloists will be featured at the concert. One featured performer, alumnus Kevin Jacks, is a member of the Shreveport Opera and former member of the University Concert Choir and Chamber Singers.

Sorority encourages university to contribute to area food drive

Alpha Kappa Alpha Inc. is holding a canned food drive today and tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Student Center, Main Floor.

The proceeds will go to Christian Community Action of Lincoln Parish, located at 108 Bonner St. All organizations and students are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items.

The goal for the food drive is 200 items.

Association accepts donations to fight, prevent heart diseases

Donations for the American Heart Association will be accepted until noon Wednesday in the Bookstore.

Students and faculty members can donate $1 and have their names placed in a drawing for prizes, which include Java City beverage coupons, a Tech Teamshop gift, a Bookstore gift or Tech President Dr. Dan Reneau's parking spot for a day.

Donations will be used to research heart disease and strokes.

Housing to stage annual dance with Mardi Gras holiday theme

Midnight Magic will take place from 8 p.m. until midnight Thursday in the Student Center, Main Floor.

Everyone is invited to this formal event. This year's theme is Mardi Gras Masquerade. Tickets are $10 with a Tech ID and can be purchased at the Housing Office in Harris Hall or from any resident assistant.

Activities planned for the program include karaoke, a fortune teller, a caricature artist, battle of the sexes, plinko, football throw, Bulldog Feud and star knowledge.

Two grand prizes will be given away at the end of the night: a double occupancy residence hall room for spring quarter at no charge (restrictions apply) and a $300 gift certificate to Pecanland Mall in Monroe. Cajun cuisine will be served at the event.
