During the month of April, the Student Speakers Bureau and KLPI will host HealthTech, a radio program about stress, healthy sexual decisions, eating habits and relationships.
The program will air at 7 p.m. Wednesdays on 89.1 KLPI.
The program will last about an hour. Two SSB members will present facts on the topic for the first 30 minutes.
Robert Burt, coordinator for Student Speakers Bureau and clinical coordinator for Counseling Services, said the program will give students beneficial facts about issues that are relevant and important.
"If we are talking about pertinent, relevant and critical issues that are important to college students, maybe someone will come to the Counseling Center," Burt said.
The rest of the time, listeners will have a chance to call in with questions they may have about specific topics.
Students interested in calling in during the show can call KLPI at 257-3689.
"The best thing about this is it's anonymous," Blake Frederick, a member of SSB and a senior speech major, said.
"If someone didn't want to come in, they could call in."
Burt said the topics to be discussed on the program will be "Chill Out;" "Dodging the Punches, Sexual Concerns of Relationship Encounters," or "S.C.O.R.E;" "When Love Goes Right;" and "What's Eating You?," a session on eating disorders.
Each topic will be discussed on a separate week.
"Chill Out" will talk about the symptoms of stress exhaustion and stress management techniques.
The second topic, "Dodging the Punches," will discuss abusive relationships. It will cover unhealthy warning signs and how to recover.
"The reason the SSB decided to do a radio show on [abuse] is because over the last year, we have had an increase of students come in reporting that they are in an abusive relationship," Burt said.
"S.C.O.R.E." will be about sexually-transmitted diseases, making healthy decisions and different protection methods.
"We want to talk about the truth," Burt said. "There are misconceptions about healthy sexual decisions."
The fourth topic, "When Love Goes Right," will be about relationship building.
"What's Eating You?" will be about eating disorders and proper eating habits.
"We will talk about clear, accurate information on that," Burt said. "We have had students die in the dorms because of eating problems."
Robert Scott, a senior general studies major, will be the announcer hosting the program.
"I think the show will benefit the listeners, considering the subjects will be pertinent to the listeners," Scott said.
"The question-and-answer will be where they will get the most use out of the program."
