Tech's men's and women's track teams turned out solid performances at the LSU Tiger Relays March 26-27 at Bernie Moore Stadium in Baton Rouge by posting a total of six regional qualifying marks and a first-place finish in the men's distance medley relay.
"We had a really good meet," Tech head coach Gary Stanley said. "The men's distance medley relay was a great win for us, especially since we beat LSU at their facility running their A-team. It was a very tight race, and I was very happy with our guys."
The men's distance medley relay finished with a time of 9-minutes, 57.41 seconds on Friday, two seconds over second-place LSU.
The women's 1,600-meter relay team posted an outstanding run of 3:35.98 that shattered the Tech school record by ten seconds.
"That time should be in the top ten in the country," Stanley said. "We know it's still early in the season, and these times are only going to get better."
The women's team finished second to LSU, who bested Tech by .7 seconds.
"That run really made the trip home a lot easier," Tech assistant coach Shawn Jackson said. "It gave us a lot of confidence to know that we could run so well at their place."
Shandra Freeman posted a regional qualifying mark by posting 11.76 in the 100-meter dash, as did Doria Appleberry, who posted 13.91 in the 100-meter hurdles.
Kaia Durrant Nairne threw 14.47 meters in the shot put, and Brenda-Grace Hunt threw 51.38 meters in the javelin throw. Both were also regional qualifying marks.
The Tech track teams will travel to Austin, Texas, for the Texas Relays at the University of Texas.
"We're looking forward to this weekend," Stanley said. "Teams from all over the country come to the Texas Relays to compete, and you have to bring your A-game. It's very stout, and we're excited to be going."
