Short shorts, spaghetti-strapped shirts, open toed shoes, booked tanning appointments and a little bit of sunshine.

Yes, it's that time of year again. Spring is here!

I remember it was around this time when I was growing up that my mother would shout those famous words before I left the house: "You're gonna catch cold while you're trying to be cute. Put some clothes on; it's not summertime."

But I wanted to pull out the shorts so bad at the end of March. Little did I know that although spring was in the air, so was that same chill that caused so many of my childhood friends to catch their annual spring cold.

Now that I'm older, I still feel the pressure to wear little clothing in late March and early April. The department stores have cut the prices of their winter clothes to half price, which I'm not complaining about.

Every time I look around, I'm being tempted to indulge myself in the season. The pool doors are no longer closed; the grass is freshly cut, calling out the couples to sit and picnic; the flowers have bloomed, pleading that someone use them for photograph backgrounds.

Ahhh yes, the smell of spring. With that smell also comes the fever, Spring Fever that is. Who knows? Maybe it really is contagious. If bad attitudes put other people in bad moods, isn't the opposite true? Don't good moods make others feel the same way?

What is it about this time that puts us in such a happy mood? Perhaps it's the thought of having only about a month or so left until the summer vacation begins.

Maybe it's the realization that in a few short weeks, that little white house on wheels, more commonly known as the snow cone shop, will soon open up that sliding glass window in attempts to spoil our appetites with tasty colorful juices.

Maybe it's the smell of crawfish that invites you to the table with friends and family, because during that time everyone is equal. There are smiles and tails all around the porch or deck, depending on your lifestyle.

Or is it the season and the warmth of the sun that makes us want to run around carefree and feel like kids again?

Or is it the sight of that sunlight that makes us want to drive around with the convertible tops down because after this season, the weather will be too hot to enjoy.

Hearing the little birds sing just brings a smile to your face, doesn't it? Doesn't it make you wonder what they're singing about?

For the sports buffs, it's opening day at the baseball stadiums. It's the thought that Sports Center on ESPN is about to get a little bit more lively with the back-to-back homeruns and intentional hit-by-a-pitch replays.

Whatever the reasoning might be, spring is here. We can't stop it or tell it to wait a few weeks. We just have to enjoy it. In reality, I guess you don't have to indulge in the season.

You could be a hermit and not experience the happiness that accompanies this season. For so long we've been taught not to fall into peer pressure. But I'm telling you, my friend, to dive right on in to it. I'll take the blame for your slipping into the pressure. After all, everyone is doing it.
