This item originally appeared in the April 14, 2005 issue of The Tech Talk.I don't mean to sound like a nerd or anything but will the people who like to talk during class please just shut up?
Yeah, I'm talking to you.
I really am trying to learn about the fundamentals of economics, and, yes, I do think it is as boring as you do, but just I can't read the book and make As on the tests. I know you, Mr. Engineer Man, may understand it, and that is why you insist on doing your thermodynamics during the lecture. But will you please keep me in mind?
I know you stay up until the wee hours of the night working on one problem, but I work hard as well, and I can't understand a thing the professor is saying over you and your friend talking about integrals and what not.
If working the problem is that important, then go to the library to work on it, or at least take it in the hall. Maybe if you had paid attention in your engineering class, you would have understood the homework, and not had to do it in your other classes.
If I am not surrounded by people talking about engineering homework in my econ class, it's guys talking the entire time in my biology class. They go on and on about how stupid the class is and how they learned all this "crap" in high school. When test time came around, however, they would get a D or C on it. I guess they didn't know as much as they thought they did.
And it's not just the guys doing it; all too often females are the ones jabbering away. I understand that sometimes during class you just can't wait until class is over to tell your girlfriend about how hot the guy you saw in the CEnIT is, but try to contain yourself. He will still be hot after class, but if you just cannot wait, write a note.
And another thing, the class doesn't really care about how rude your roommate was to you this morning.
We don't care that she left her dirty dishes in the sink again, and that she refuses to use a coaster. We especially don't care that she was hitting on your boyfriend while you were watching The OC.
To all those students who feel the need to talk in class, please, just be quiet.
You should keep in mind the other students who are trying to learn and the professor who is trying to speak over your loud voice.
Think about how extremely rude it is for you to be talking while the professor is trying to teach, and if you think they don't see you because you are in a class with 200 other students, they do.
They are trying their hardest to teach us about what they have spent years in school learning; the least we can do is have enough courtesy and respect for them to listen.
When we graduate do you think it is acceptable to talk during a meeting with your boss?
I don't think so.
So, the next time you find yourself talking in the middle of class and you are getting strange looks from your peers, please just shut up.
