Despite thundershowers, the second annual Bone Bowl went on as scheduled Saturday night and ended with a final score of 10-9 in favor of the White team, thanks to a stopped two-point conversion in the final play of the ballgame.

"I was very impressed with both teams," head coach Jack Bicknell said. "We still have a lot to work on, but all-in-all I was very pleased."

Junior quarterbacks Matt Kubik and Donald Allen, as well as red-shirt freshman quarterback Zac Champion rotated every series on offense to play for both teams. Junior Brent Rawls did not play in order to continue to nurse an injury.

Both defenses set the tone for most of the game, as neither side scored until red-shirt freshman kicker Zach Myatt nailed a 36-yard field goal for the Blue team to cap off an 8-play drive led by Allen in the Blue team's third offensive series.

"The defense has done fantastic all spring," Bicknell said. "We kind of held back some things obviously because it was a scrimmage, but I thought that both defenses played great."

The defense continued to hold for both sides until the seventh series, when White team quarterback Allen connected with senior wide receiver Tramissian Davis on a slant route for a 14-yard touchdown reception. Myatt's point after was good, and the White team took a 7-3 lead.

Neither team would get on the scoreboard again until the eleventh series, when Kubik led the White team down the field to set up Myatt's second field goal of the afternoon from 44 yards out.

The Blue team answered on the final series of the night when Allen led a five-play, 70-yard touchdown drive. Allen connected with sophomore wide receiver Chris Maddox on third and long for 17 yards and hit junior Eric Newman on the next play for 20-yard touchdown to make the score 10-9.

The Blue team opted to go for two but was stopped when Allen was sacked in the backfield.

Tech's defensive standouts were the Blue team's senior defensive lineman Travon Brown with three sacks and junior linebacker Jeremy Hamilton with two sacks. Both finished with four tackles. Senior linebacker Byron Santiago finished with eight tackles and one sack.

On the White team, linebacker Robert Burrell had 10 tackles and three sacks, while fellow linebacker Philip Fontenot finished with five tackles and two sacks.

Allen completed 14 of 20 passes for 223 yards and two touchdowns, while Kubik completed 12 of 16 for 122 yards. Champion rounded out the quarterbacks by completing 9 of 16 for 68 yards.

"I was happy with our quarterbacks," Bicknell said. "It's difficult to rotate three different quarterbacks, but I thought they did an excellent job."

And while the quarterbacks may be question marks for Tech, halfback Ryan Moats is an exclamation point.

"The spring has been great for me," Moats said. "I feel like I'm stronger, and I can run downhill a little harder."

Despite only eight starts, Moats finished last season with an incredible 1,300 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns. He says his outlook on the summer and next season is bright.

"I hope to go into this summer and get better and better," Moats said. "Our goal is to play hard throughout our schedule and win the WAC."

Bicknell shares that excitement.

"We have a really tough schedule," Bicknell said. "Even so, I'm looking forward to next year and am very excited. I feel like if we can stay healthy we could really surprise some teams."
