Tech’s “Shaping the 21st
Century: Focus on India” program is continuing a fourth week with a lecture
Thursday on India and Pakistan by an international expert on contemporary world
conflict.
The celebration will conclude Tuesday with the annual
International Student Organization Food and Cultural Festival from 4 to 7 p.m.
in the Student Center, Main Floor.
Dozens of countries will be represented there; food
tickets will be on sale.
Thursday's speaker, Dr. Timothy D. Hoyt, is an associate professor
of strategy and policy at the Naval War College in Newport, R.I.
His talk is set for 7 p.m. in the Student Center, Room
223.
Hoyt received his doctorate in International Relations
and Strategic Studies from The Johns Hopkins University’s Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies in 1997.
At Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service,
1998-2002, Hoyt taught graduate courses on South Asian security, technology and
international security, and military strategy.
In October 2003, he testified before subcommittees of the
House Committee on International Relations regarding terrorism in South and
Southwest Asia. His recent publications include chapters and articles on the
limits of military force in the global war on terrorism, and the impact of
culture on military doctrine and strategy.
These “Focus on India” events help round out Tech's
international education requirement that calls for every graduate to gain
exposure to and appreciation of other nations, Vice President for Academic
Affairs Ken Rea said.
Rea added that selecting India for this year’s
international series was based on India’s emerging economic power, its size,
its democratic government and Tech’s sizable Indian student enrollment.
Events are open to the public and admission is free.
Other scheduled events include Monday’s Noon Brown Bag
luncheon series speaker Vibha Jani,
chair of Tech's interior design program, who will address how culture shapes
architecture in India.
Her presentation will be in the International Student
Office, Tolliver Hall.
