The department of social sciences can now award its two upperclassmen’s scholarships to more students.
Dr. Robert K. Toburen, head of the department of social sciences and a professor of political science, said seven students in social sciences were awarded the John Caldwell Memorial Scholarship and the John K. Price Scholarship last week.
“When we started giving out the scholarships, we were able to give each out to one student,” Toburen said.
Toburen said the scholarship recipients were selected on April 26, and these scholarships are important because they are given to upperclassmen.
“A lot of scholarships are given to incoming freshmen,” Toburen said. “But one of the nice things about these scholarships is they recognize students’ good work during their college years.”
The four recipients for the John Caldwell Memorial Scholarship this year were senior political science majors Holly Hollis and Adam Owens and senior sociology majors Derek Sampey and Candice Myers.
The three recipients for the John K. Price Scholarship this year were junior political science majors, Jenessa Carter and Mary Beth Salter and Anthony DeSalvo, a junior sociology major.
DeSalvo said receiving the scholarship came as a surprise.
“There were a lot of great applicants,” DeSalvo said. “I want to thank the social sciences department for awarding me this scholarship to help me further my degree in sociology.”
DeSalvo said he also thinks it is great to reward upperclassmen and congratulates all the other recipients.
“This is a great department, and that is why I have stayed in it,” DeSalvo said. “I hope to make them proud when I graduate.”
Carter said she thanks the department very much for recognizing her and it is nice that the scholarships are awarded to juniors and seniors.
“You are able to show that you are worthy, and it is not only based on test scores,” Carter said.
Toburen said the scholarships were originally funded by donations in honor of the late Caldwell, a former geography professor, and Price, a retired political science professor.
“Sometimes, additional contributions have been made in their honor,” Toburen said. “But we also have the Caldwell Jambalaya Luncheon, and money generated by custom textbook sales to help fund the scholarships.”
Toburen said because of the additional money raised they can give more students scholarships.
The scholarships are awarded by the faculty of the department of social sciences on a competitive basis.
“These students are among the best students in the social sciences department,” Toburen said. “They certainly have proved themselves by the time they are juniors or seniors.”
