As I end my second year of living in the dorms, and prepare for a third at the end of the summer, I feel the need to look on the bright side of being an on-campus resident.
Sure there are the negatives, but you’ll find that anywhere you live, unless you’re the Queen of England or something.
For one thing, isn’t it great to be able to wake up 5 minutes before class, roll out of bed and go? (This is of course having taken a shower before going to bed).
You can’t do that if you live 10 minutes away, and have to have time to find a parking spot, too. I have never passed by and envied people who are circling around looking for a parking spot, as I get to class on time.
Another great thing is the allotted money you have set at the beginning of the quarter on your Tech Express card.
It’s such a blissful feeling in the first few weeks of a quarter to have all this declining balance, and be able to get Chick-Fil-A at the swipe of a card.
No worrying about pocket change or cash, and I don’t have to walk very far to find somewhere that will take my card.
Then, if you use up all your declining balance and Tech Express money a month before the quarter ends like I do, you still have your faithful meal plan in the good old cafeteria.
Say what you will, but the stir fry there is good, and I could eat it every day.
Sharing a room with someone can also be a positive, if it’s the right situation.
I have had two different roommates since coming to Tech, and both experiences helped me to grow as a person, as you have to be less selfish to make the living situation work.
Personalities and preferences may clash, but there are always room changes if it does not work out.
The community bathrooms are also something that can stretch a person, in a good way.
You have a choice when it comes to how you view them; you can either be really, really annoyed, or you can be really, really tolerant. You have the rest of your life to have your own bathroom, so a school year or two (or three) of sharing won’t kill you.
And there may not be a plethora of choices when it comes to which dorm to live in, but at least there is variety.
Mitchell was my freshman year and one quarter of this year, Graham was the remainder of this year, and I will experience Pearce next year.
See? Lots of variety.
In reality, no matter where you are, you can choose to see the good things about a circumstance, or you can sulk and complain. Enjoy on-campus life while you’re here; it could be much worse.
