Tech track and field continued its stellar season at the 111th Penn Relays at Franklin Field with performances in the finals Saturday and multiple regional qualifying marks.
Sprinter Johnathan Holland posted a time of 10.56 for the second fastest mark in the men's 100-meter preliminary heat, while on the women's side, Doria Appleberry clocked a 13.62 in the women's 100-meter hurdles. Both placed fourth in the finals with Holland running a 10.46 and Appleberry posting a mark of 13.47. Shandra Freeman also qualified for the finals with a time of 11.69 in the women's 100 and placed eighth with a 11.87.
Chantell Richardson came in third with a mark of 19 feet, 7 inches in the long jump for a regional qualifying mark. Shaterika Allen placed second in the shot put with 46-9.5, and Monica Williams earned a regional qualifying mark with a discus throw of 161-3.
Brenda Grace-Hunt finished seventh in the javelin with a 150-7.
"We performed in front of 50,000 plus people with national coverage for the finals," head coach Gary Stanley said. "If you want to compete at the big level with great exposure, it's the place to be."
The women's 400-meter relay team of Appleberry, Freeman, Latonia Wilson and Donesha Spivey clocked in a time of 45.61 for a first-place finish in their respective heat.
The women's 1,600 relay team of Appleberry, Nina Gilbert, Krystal Cole and Wilson also ran Thursday with a time of 3:42.40 and a third-place finish. Then, they finished seventh place in the championship with a time of 3:40.04. Bridgitte Ladoucer ran in the final in place of Wilson, who nursed an injury.
Tech returns home to compete at the Jim Mize Track and Field Complex tomorrow for Tech Twilight with field events starting at 1:30 and running events beginning at 5:00.
