Marie Bukowski, a professor of
art, is making an impression on the international art community. She is
participating in the international exhibition, “Women in Printmaking,” opening
tomorrow at the Lessedra Gallery in Sofia, Bulgaria.
“I was invited to be part of the show after attending the
World Art Print Exhibition in Sofia, Bulgaria ,June
[2005],” Bukowski said.
Bukowski said she remained in
Bulgaria for three weeks last summer as a visiting artist and juror at the World
Art Print Exhibition.
That is where she said she met Georei
Kelov, the owner of the Lessedra
Gallery, who organized the exhibition.
“I knew the Lessedra Gallery
has monthly exhibits, so I took some of my work for [Kelov]
to see,” Bukowski said. “He decided to do ‘Women in
Printmaking’ and accepted that work into the show.”
Kelov also invited Bukowski to exhibit her traveling solo show in the Lessedra Gallery in May.
Dane Landry, a graduate student of art, will be a
featured student.
“She is my adviser and the only printmaking instructor,”
Landry said. “I was working with her when she created much of the work she will
be showing.”
Although funds have not yet been allocated for Landry’s
trip in the spring, he said he is optimistic.
“The show will be a way to open up dialogue between art
students there and art students here,” Landry said.
The exhibit will open in Sofia, Bulgaria, then travel to
Romania and close in Hungary, Bukowski said.
“I will go the closing reception in Hungary and fly
straight to Spain to begin my summer residency,” Bukowski
said.
Jonathan Donehoo, a professor
of art, said the Louisiana Division of the Arts just awarded Bukowski an Artist Mini-Grant to fund her residency.
Bukowski said the Canserratt is an open workshop right outside of Barcelona,
Spain, where painters and printmakers come to work from all around the world.
“I applied and submitted ten slides in April 2004 and
decided to write a funding proposal when I found out I was accepted,” Bukowski said.
“The Canserratt invited me to
come make prints for a month.”
