Ever wonder where all the money students spent on tuition is going?
On average, the fee sheet of a student taking 12 hours has three charges added to credit hours and on-campus living.
Approximately $144 goes to a Lagniappe fee, a technology fee and an energy surcharge fee.
Joseph Thomas, vice president for financial services, said there are several fees that are necessary.
"These are the fees that touch students everyday," Thomas said.
For undergraduate students who take more than eight hours, a $20 fee is added for the Lagniappe. Thomas also said there is an energy surcharge fee of $8 per credit hour up to eight credit hours.
A technology fee of $5 per credit hour, up to twelve credit hours, was on the fee sheet. This fee funded Tolliver Hall's internet connections.
An additional fifty cents is charged for the Association of Women Students to all female students who are enrolled for eight hours or more.
"The AWS charge is absolutely worthwhile," Linda Griffin, director of counseling services, said. "It funds programs, projects and concerns that are unique to women."
Fees also differ according to a student's major.
The College of Administration and Business fee is $40, the College of Education fee is $5, the College of Engineering and Science fee is $37, the College of Applied and Natural Sciences fee is $7, the School of Art and the School of Architecture fee is $30 and the Division of Nursing fee is $50.
Thomas said there have been three fees added or raised since the spring quarter.
Thomas said these fees contribute to KLPI, the Union Board, the Student Government Association, dramatics, The Tech Talk ,and speech and forensics.
Altogether, for an eight-hour full-time student, Thomas said, this is a $79 increase for fall quarter.
Travis Waters, a junior architecture major, said he understands why the fees are important.
"I'm already broke and this is money I don't have," Waters said. "But if they are bettering Tech, then it is worth it."
