On any given day, a passerby might see students sitting on the steps of their dorms, with eyes gazing to the heavens, wondering what else Ruston has to offer for someone on a limited budget.
Ronnie Wiggins, director of recreational facilities, said it is beneficial for students to have an active lifestyle, and there are plenty of free or low-cost activities on campus and around Ruston.
"Staying active allows them to vent some of their energy so they don't go back to the dorms and wreak havoc," Wiggins said. "There's a wide variety of intramural and club sports they can participate in."
Wiggins said the Maxie Lambright Intramural Center is a great place for students to go when they are looking for something to do on campus.
He said the facility, which is attended by about 1,200 people a day, boasts a $300,000 fitness center. M.S. Carroll Natatorium and the tennis courts are also good options for students with free time.
"I think our university is one of the leaders in the state when it comes to facilities for our students to have [access to]," Wiggins said.
For students who are looking for a physically challenging activity off campus, Celeste Butler, administrative assistant for the Ruston-Lincoln Chamber of Commerce and Convention and Visitors Bureau, said Lincoln Parish Park offers walking and biking trails. She said the park does charge a minimal entrance fee but that it is worth the cost.
"It's probably the best $1.50 you'll spend," Butler said. "There are several mountain bike races held out there each year."
The park is located at 198 Parish Park Rd. off the Farmerville Highway.
Back on campus, the Bulldog Kennel, located under the bookstore, provides several other indoor entertainment options. Barry Morales, director of student development, said it offers activities like bowling and pool.
"The Bulldog Kennel offers students an alternative type of entertainment they may not normally consider," Morales said.
Morales, who coordinates various student activities, also said concerts and comedians will be available on campus during the year at little or no cost to students.
Wiggins said students should find something they are interested in, whether it is intramurals or some other activity, and get involved.
"My advice to any person on this campus is to meet as many people as they can meet," Wiggins said. "They should get involved in as many activities and organizations as they can."
