LOUISIANA TECH UNIVERSITY SENATE

1. Call to Order: Patsy Bourgeois
The December 11, 2006 meeting of the University Senate was called to order at 4:05 p.m. in Ropp Center, Room 105, by President Patsy Bourgeois.
2. Roll Call: Rose Butler
Senators absent from the meeting: David Mills, Charles Cicciarella, Sumeet Dua, Bill Deese, Tabbetha Dobbins, Chester Wilson, Linda Leonard, Ron Cathey, David Smith, Kate Perot, and Jennifer Byrd.
3. Adoption of Agenda
A motion was made to allow the Chair to reorder the agenda. Motion was accepted. A motion to accept the revised agenda to discuss Blackboard issues was seconded and approved.
Debra Blackman introduced Danny Schales and Roy Waters from the Computing Center. An information sheet was given out. Danny Schales addressed the Senate regarding Blackboard. Blackboard is now being monitored constantly and running much more smoothly. Question and answer session followed.
4. Adoption of Minutes
A motion was made to accept the November 13, 2006 minutes. The motion was seconded and approved.
5. Treasurer’s Report
A motion was made to accept the Treasurer’s Report. The motion was seconded and approved.
6. Announcements
A. Faculty Advisory Council – Tech received four Service Learning grants.
B. Administrative and Planning Council – The Tech Writing Center is now open to assist students. Assistance in English will be targeted first. Paula Brown is the Coordinator.
C. Student Athletic Advisory Board – SGA gave a seat on the Faculty Advisory Committee to a member of the Senate. Trey Gibson was appointed and will attend the meetings. He will report back to the Senate after each meeting.
7. Unfinished Business
Telephone System Improvements – Nothing new to report.
Parking Focus Group – no report
300-400 level courses – Patsy Bourgeois met with several Tech administrators to discuss this issue. The change was not mandated by SACS. However, SACS representatives started a discussion regarding this because they noticed freshmen were taking 300 level classes. As a result, a decision was made to be sure that the 300/400 courses were level in content. Question and answer period followed. Patsy Bourgeois agreed to discuss additional questions from the Senate with Dr. Rea and report to the Senate.
8. Voluntary Remarks
Brian Etheridge informed the Senate that 9 month faculty may have the summer insurance premiums (which usually go up in cost) spread out during the Fall Quarter instead of being taken out of the September check. Faculty is asked to call Personnel for more details.
Debra Blackman asked if the Senate would like to have CITDL address the Senate about Blackboard. Senate members agreed that CITDL should come to a Senate meeting for this discussion.
