LOUISIANA TECH UNIVERSITY SENATE

Volume 16                April  2007               Number 8

 

1.                  Call to Order:  Patsy Bourgeois

The April 24, 2007 meeting of the University Senate was called to order at

4:08 p.m. in Ropp Center, Room 105, by President Patsy Bourgeois.

 

2.                  Bob Vento, Registrar, addressed the Senate about the ongoing dialog with faculty concerning the student information system.  Louisiana Tech is in the process of seeking an open source system which will work best for the university in maintaining student information.  INFORMS system is one that he believes will fit Tech’s needs.

 

A question and answer period followed.  Question was asked if Tech will move away from using a mainframe.  Answer was no.  INFORMS is mainframe based.  Faculty requested a single sign-on.  Question was asked if BOSS will be up for 24 hours on a daily basis.  On the present system, it will not.  On the new system, if used, it will be available 24 hours a day.  The pluses and minuses of on-line grades were discussed.

 

3.                  Roll Call:  Rose Butler

Senators absent from the meeting:  Jon Pratt, Michelle Martin, Peter Gallagher, Jan Fuller, Bonnie Gerald, Pauline Leonard, Charles Cicciarella, Bill Deese, Tabbetha Dobbins, Rastko Selmic, Chester Wilson, Rebecca Brantley, Ron Cathey, David Smith, Susan Roach and Aziz Saber.

 

4.                  Adoption of Agenda

A motion was made to accept the agenda.  The motion was seconded and approved.

 

5.                  Adoption of Minutes

A motion was made to accept the March 26, 2007 minutes.  The motion was seconded and approved after a correction was noted.

 

6.                  Treasurer’s Report – no report

 

7.       Announcements

A. Faculty Advisory Council – Patsy Bourgeois

Meeting will be held later this week at ULL. 

B. Administrative and Planning Council – Patsy Bourgeois attended the meeting on April 4.  Main discussion was about faculty’s yearly evaluations.  Some areas are not being evaluated as required.  A training video on evaluations was shown. 

A possible 5% raise may occur for faculty.

Fischer Report – no official report has been received.

8.       Unfinished Business

A.       CITDL 

CITDL met last week.  A video conference with ULL on moogle was shown.  The group had many questions.  ULL phased in moogle.

B.       Awards

          1.       F. Jay Taylor Undergraduate Award Election

                   Senate members voted

          2.       Update

For those colleges with a run-off, faculty should have received ballots.

 

  8.     Voluntary Remarks

A.       Dr. Reneau has received a call for entries to the US Professor of the Year Award.  David Hall’s name will be submitted.

 

B.                  Health Care Changes – Brian Etheridge

Current MCO & HMO will be dropped next year.  Humana will be the HMO.  There will be a general informational meeting on insurance next week. 

 

Gene Johnson will be on a sabbatical during the 07-08 academic year.  He was thanked for his contribution to the Senate.

                   Senate members expressed appreciation for the new phones and voice mail.

Patsy Bourgeois invited the Senate members to her retirement party.  It will be May 11 in the Ropp Center from 2-4pm.

Jim King will speak at the next meeting on future developments, changes and improvements to Tech.
