LOUISIANA TECH UNIVERSITY SENATE

1. Call to Order: D’eane Sheehan
The March 21, 2005 meeting of the University Senate was called to order at
4:00 p.m. in Ropp Center, Room 105, by President D’eane Sheehan.
2. Roll Call: Rose Butler
Senators absent from the meeting: David Mills, Sumeet Dua, Rastko Selmic, Mark Barker, Tim Morse, Amy Stegall, Colin Clarke, and Alexis Wreden.
3. Adoption of Agenda
A motion was made to accept the agenda. The motion was seconded and approved.
4. Adoption of the February 28, 2005 minutes.
A motion was made to accept the minutes. The motion was seconded and approved.
5. A motion was made to accept the Treasurer’s report. The motion was seconded and approved.
6. Announcements
A. Academic Planning Council – D’eane Sheehan
Budget – Dr. Reneau is concerned about the 2005-2006 budget. Up to 200 less students are projected for next year. Dr. Reneau requested that the Deans submit their budgets with a 5% cut to cover the projected cuts.
Dual Enrollment – In the future, a dual enrollment program may be initiated. This program will allow high school students to take college credit classes while still in high school.
Student Achievement Center – An architect will be chosen soon for the renovation to the former Admissions office in Wyly Tower.
B. Bookstore Policy
This was not discussed at CADS due to a lack of time. It will be discussed at the next CADS meeting.
7. Unfinished Business
A. Phone Committee Report
Motion made to postpone discussion to a future meeting. Motion accepted.
8. New Business
A. Nominations for F. J. Taylor Undergraduate Teaching Award –Requirements for those nominated for awards were read. Those nominated will be contacted by D’eane Sheehan and asked to submit an informational packet which will be posted on the Senate website.
7. Voluntary Remarks
A. Mary Livingston sent a letter expressing her concern over the lack of availability of some GER classes needed for freshman and sophomore students. This problem causes many students to take those GER classes in their senior year.
B. Gene Johnson discussed undergraduate GPA. The Registrar’s office rules state that an undergraduate who is taking graduate classes will not have the graduate grades included in his undergraduate GPA.
A student can graduate from Louisiana Tech with less than a cumulative 2.0 GPA.
C. LONI
Mel Corley reported that there will be a meeting in May at Louisiana Tech to learn about the LONI system. An exact date has not been set. For more information go to http://mycenit.latech.edu/LONI2005
