LOUISIANA TECH UNIVERSITY SENATE

1. Call to Order: Rick Simmons
The May 17, 2004 meeting of the University Senate was called to order at
4:05 p.m. in Ropp Center, Room 105, by President Rick Simmons.
2. Roll Call: Rose Butler
Senators absent from the meeting: Jim Dickson, Mary Murimi, Jeff Walczyk, Boris Teske, Tim Morse, Donnie Bell, Jason Pigg and Saul Zalesch.
3. Adoption of Agenda
A motion was made to accept the agenda. The motion was seconded and approved.
4. Adoption of the April 26, 2004 minutes.
A motion was made to accept the minutes. The motion was seconded and approved.
5. Announcements: Rick Simmons
A. Grievance Committee Appointments – Gene Johnson has agreed to serve on this committee for the College of Administration and Business.
B. Awards and Elections - No proxies will be able to vote on the University Senate positions of President, Vice-president, Treasurer and Parliamentarian.
The procedure on voting for the University Senate Chair and Virgil Orr Awards and the election of the 2004-2005 Senate officers was reviewed.
C. One time merit-based stipend for continuing faculty – The merit-based stipend will be awarded for just this academic year. If a faculty member was not at Louisiana Tech before 2002, he/she will not receive the stipend. Some budegtary problems were discussed, and the senate was told that the money came from academic fees earmarked for faculty salaries only, and therefore staff was unable to be included in this stipend.
6. Treasurer’s report – A motion was made to accept the Treasurer’s report. A motion was seconded and approved
7. Unfinished Business – none
8. New Business
A. University Senate Chair Award Voting – The Senators voted on this award.
B. Virgil Orr Award Voting – The Senators voted on this award.
C. Election of officers – Nominations were taken from the floor, and the Senators voted with these results for the 2004-2005 officers being:
President – D’eane Sheehan
Vice President – Mel Corley
Parliamentarian – Charles Robinson
Treasurer – Amy Stegall
A motion was made to destroy all ballots. Motion passed.
9. Voluntary Remarks
Charles Robinson announced that he is one of the candidates for the Dean of the College of Engineering and Science.
Rick Simmons expressed his appreciation for being elected to serve the Senate as their president. And he thanked the members for their service and for working with him.
A motion was made to adjourn, motion seconded.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:48m.
