MINUTES

 

LOUISIANA TECH UNIVERSITY SENATE

Volume 14                   November 2004                       Number 3

 

1.                  Call to Order:  D’eane Sheehan

The November 15, 2004 meeting of the University Senate was called to order at

4:00 p.m. in Ropp Center, Room 105, by President D’eane Sheehan.

 

2.                  Roll Call:  Rose Butler

Senators absent from the meeting:  Amy Stegall, Bob Burt, Alan Goldspiel, Celia Lewis, David Anderson and Andrew Higgins.

 

3.                  Adoption of Agenda

A motion was made to accept the agenda.  The motion was seconded and approved.

 

4.                  Adoption of the October 25, 2004 minutes.

A correction to the minutes under Unfinished Business was submitted as follows:  The sentence ‘Dr. Rea later met with the Council of Academic Deans meeting’ should be correctly worded ‘Dr. Rea had earlier met with the Council of Academic Deans.’  A motion was made to accept the corrected minutes.  The motion was seconded and approved.

 

5.                  Announcements

A.     Faculty Advisory Council Report – Patsy Bourgeois, the Louisiana Tech Senate Representative, attended the October 29, 2004 meeting at Southeastern University. She reported that many things were discussed.  One discussion was concerning the effect community colleges may have on universities.  Patsy Bourgeois requested that Senate members pass on any concerns to her, and she will present them to the Council at future meetings.

B.     NCAA – Mel Corley

Mel Corley reported that the Louisiana Tech athletic graduate rate is 66% (3rd in WAC).  For those who completed their eligibility, the graduation rate is 88%.

C.     Governor Blanco’s Visit to Tech

Governor Blanco visited Louisiana Tech recently.  She said that she was very impressed with the inter-institutional collaboration at Louisiana Tech.

6.                  Treasurer’s report – A motion was made to accept the Treasurer’s report.  The motion was seconded and approved.

 

7.                  Unfinished Business

 

A.     Bookstore –A drafted proposal regarding the current textbook policy for multi-section courses was presented to the Senate members.  Members were asked to study the proposal and vote on it at the December meeting.  A motion was then made to postpone the vote until the December meeting.  A discussion on the wording began.  After this discussion, the motion to postpone voting on the present proposal was withdrawn.  A motion was then made to redraft the proposal and submit it at the December meeting.  This motion was seconded and approved.

 

B.   Retirement – Members were asked at the October meeting to poll faculty in their area and ask if they would like to have a retirement representative come to Louisiana Tech and answer questions regarding retirement. 

 

D’eane Sheehan reported that she had received enough requests to ask for this meeting.  She will contact Mr. Dyson to set up a date and time for the meeting. Members were asked to continue soliciting questions for the representative.

 

 

8.                  New Business

A.        Large Format printer – The Senate is considering asking the SGA to send a proposal requesting the purchase of a large format printer to the Student Technology Fee Committee.  This printer would be available for Tech students to use at a minimal cost. 

 

A potential problem was mentioned about the use of this printer at a reduced rate.  This may be considered competition for area printing companies.  D’eane Sheehan said that she would check on this potential problem before asking for the money from the Student Technology Fee Committee.           

 

9.                  Voluntary Remarks - none

 

 

A motion was made to adjourn, motion seconded.  

 

 

The meeting was adjourned at 4:33p.m.
