The Vice President for Research and Development is responsible for managing all areas related to research development, research grants and contracts, research compliance, intellectual property, technology transfer, and liaison with government and industry in support of research, development and economic development. Our goals are to:
  • Ensure that our research program is supportive and integrated with our educational goals at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.
  • Identify, cultivate, and support those faculty and staff who have interests in pursuing grants, contracts, gifts and other research funding opportunities.
  • Foster an entrepreneurial culture among faculty in identifying resources that can support their research.
  • Market the university’s research and development programs to the external public.
  • More goals can be found here.

Units reporting to the Vice President for Research and Development

The Office of University Research offers direct support to faculty and staff in all aspects of seeking and maintaining external grant funding. From identifying funding sources to proposal preparation to finally managing grant accounts, the University Research staff provides support, training, and education to help faculty and staff reach their goals for external funding.

The Office of Intellectual Property and Commercialization is a combined technology transfer and industrial liaison office that manages patents and other intellectual properties for Tech and provides assistance to firms and individuals seeking research or licensing assistance. Developmental research in cooperation with government and industry is a natural conduit for technology transfer. Such work is part of the mission of many of Tech’s applied research and engineering centers. Tech also operates a Technology Transfer Center in Shreveport, La., where technologies are showcased and groups meet to discuss technology issues. This Center is located near the Shreveport Regional Airport.

The Center for Entrepreneurship and Information Technology (CEnIT) plays an active role in the commercialization of technologies at Louisiana Tech. Through an NSF-sponsored course entitled Innovative Venture Research (IVR), CEnIT provides a structure for involving students, faculty and community mentors in conducting commercialization studies of technologies. Further, CEnIT creates an innovative entrepreneurial culture by enhancing the education of students in information technology and entrepreneurship; promoting the development and commercialization of information technologies generated by university faculty and students; and providing leadership in entrepreneurship and information technology outreach activities that will support economic development in the state. CEnIT is a collaboration between the College of Engineering and Science and the College of Administration and Business but involves participation from every college at the institution. The CEnIT Innovation Lab is a technology-rich environment created to support interdisciplinary research, class projects and entrepreneurial activities.
