Dear campus community,
Good Tuesday morning.
Yesterday, we announced plans to postpone Spring 2020 commencement exercises. While we’re all disappointed that the COVID-19 pandemic has forced us to reschedule, we know the celebration will be wonderful when we’re all together again as the Tech Family. We are committed to doing something special for the Class of 2020.
I’d like to encourage all of our graduating students to complete the survey that SGA President Abi Olsen emailed to you on Monday. I look forward to seeing the feedback from our graduating students. We will keep you informed of our decisions.
Interim Academic Policies
We also announced plans to adjust the dates for certain academic deadlines, allowing students more freedom and ability to continue on their academic journeys successfully. To see the entire interim emergency policy, please review it on our website.
First, this policy allows students more time to withdraw from courses. The withdrawal date has been changed to May 15.
In addition, it allows students to request an Incomplete (I) grade, with a final course completion date of Oct. 2. Remember that Incompletes are factored into hours attempted and quality points awarded. Therefore, they impact a student’s quarter and cumulative grade point averages.
Finally, our academic leadership responded to student requests to allow a Pass option for courses that are graded with traditional letter grades (A-F). When final grades are posted, students will have the option of requesting approval of a grade change to a Pass option or keeping the letter grade earned in the course. The optional Pass designation will be annotated on transcripts that this option was offered for Spring Quarter 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Graduating seniors will have to submit their requests from May 20-22, and other students must make their requests between May 27 and June 3.
I know that many students have asked for the Pass option this quarter. If you decide to make a request for the option, I encourage you to visit your academic advisor first so that you can find out about possible consequences for seeking this option. There could be further challenges with your GPA calculations, financial aid and scholarships, meeting grade requirements in your academic program, probation/suspension status, and challenges in applying for graduate or professional programs. Please be informed before requesting the option, because this decision is irreversible. We plan to provide more guidance for advisors and students about the potential impacts your decisions can have.
Our Good Nutrition Mission Food Pantry reopened this week to provide healthy food staples for Louisiana Tech students. The pantry, located in Carson Taylor Hall, will be open from noon to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday. If you need nutritional assistance, please visit the Pantry today.
I enjoyed chatting with a few of you in my Zoom Room yesterday afternoon. I may do that again before long.
Thank you for your attention today. This is a week of exams for many of our students. I wish you the best of luck, and I know your perseverance, commitment to excellence, and hard work will pay off! Hang in there!
