Dear campus community,
Good Friday morning.
As we complete the first full week of classes, I’d like to thank everyone for their attentiveness to wearing masks and following other health guidelines in place on the Louisiana Tech campus. We have to depend on one another to slow the spread of COVID-19, and we have to trust one another to do the right things to ensure our campus community stays safe at this time. I appreciate the hard work everyone has been doing in the classroom and beyond as we continue through the Fall 2020 Quarter.
Please be sure to go by to get your free COVID-19 testing!
Free Coursera offerings
Tech’s College of Education has recently begun a collaboration with Coursera, the world’s leading online learning platform. As a result of this agreement, members of the Tech Family have the opportunity to take courses focused on new skills focused on dealing with the challenges we face from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since the spring, we have seen the challenge and opportunity presented in this pandemic. Many of the free offerings focus on relevant job skills and credentials that can help our students, employees, and community members prepare for the future. You’ll remember that our Student Response Team, the group of employees conducting contact tracing on the Tech campus, completed their training from Johns Hopkins via the Coursera platform.
Almost 4,000 courses are offered through the platform, but these classes do not accrue credit of any type with or through Louisiana Tech University. Individuals interested in taking these free online courses through the Office of Professional Education Outreach and Coursera have until Sept. 30 to sign up and 60 days from enrollment to complete the courses they select.
We are familiar with the strong curricula offered through Coursera, and we’re excited to be partnering with them to offer more opportunities for our campus community. Our University has a limited number of user licenses, so contact the Office of Professional Educational Outreach by emailing Erika Jones at email@example.com to register.
Programs like this are among the first innovative approaches to come out of our focus on reimagining and reframing our offerings at Louisiana Tech. I look forward to sharing more information about new and exciting opportunities for our students, faculty, staff, and alumni in the future.
Student Response Team
Special thanks to our staff who are volunteering their efforts for the Student Response Team. They are contacting every individual who reports positive COVID-19 test results, or who has reported showing symptoms, to offer support and to guide them through the next steps. They also do the important tracing of contacts that enables us to get information to those who have been exposed. This CRT works incredibly hard and are putting in long hours to serve you and this institution. Thanks to all of you who have been responding to those calls and questions and your responses are strictly confidential. Your cooperation is essential in enabling us to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
I hope you join me in watching our football Bulldogs open their season against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles Saturday. The game will start at 6:30 p.m. and be available to watch on ESPN2.
Please take time this weekend to rest and prepare for the coming week. Wear your masks, maintain physical distance, and have a great weekend!
