Dear Tech Family,
Good Saturday morning.
This long weekend should all give us time to rest and relax after finishing a busy finals week and an even busier Spring 2020 Quarter. Kathy and I both welcome the chance for a bit of quiet time, but first, we have an exciting Saturday ahead.
For our family, commencement is a time to welcome guests to our home and Thomas Assembly Center to celebrate the achievements of our Louisiana Tech students. Today, however, we’ll gather around the computer to celebrate online – hopefully with many of you.
The Class of 2020 includes 1,070 graduates, and 11 of those students are earning two degrees at once. This is the third largest class in Tech history (1,100 was the largest). Seventeen of our undergraduate students have earned 4.0 GPAs. We have 154 students earning graduate degrees, and 14 earning doctoral degrees. This class had the highest entry ACT scores as freshmen, the highest graduation rate and the shortest time to degree completion of any graduation class in Louisiana Tech’s history.
These amazing students join our almost 107,000 Tech graduates worldwide.
This class has experienced more disruptive crisis than any other in our shared University history. Last spring, we worked to recover from an EF-3 tornado that plowed through our city and University, and this spring, we’ve dealt with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dealing with these crises has shown how resilient and caring our Tech Family is. Our students have exhibited each of the Tenets of Tech throughout the past year, and have reinforced the true meaning of those tenets to our campus community. Our unique culture made an impact on each of these students the minute they joined the Tech Family, and I believe it will continue to influence our graduates long after they leave this place.
I am so pleased to be able to pay tribute to our Class of 2020 today. Please join me for a special tribute at 10 a.m. today. It will air on both our Facebook page and YouTube channel. Following this tribute, we will feature separate video celebrations for each college – one every half hour in this order: Applied & Natural Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering & Science, and Liberal Arts.
Thank you all for all of your efforts this quarter. You have shown what the Tech Family is made of, and I appreciate your grit and determination. I look forward to seeing you at our face-to-face graduation ceremony on Aug. 15.
I want to give a big Thank You to Tonya Oaks Smith for her assistance with these communications, and so many other communications, throughout this Quarter.
