Dear students, faculty, and staff,
As we begin the Summer 2020 Quarter, Louisiana Tech’s Incident Response Team continues to meet to prepare for Fall 2020. This group of campus leaders continues to develop ways for us to innovate within the parameters we must follow in order to bring students and all faculty and staff back to campus.
In the coming days, we will share information with our Tech Family on our recommendations and requirements, and I encourage you to continue to review your email messages for these important updates.
Summer CARES Act grants
The Office of Financial Aid is currently reviewing applications for the Summer CARES Act grants. The application period closes June 12, so if you are taking classes this summer and have not applied, please visit AcademicWorks to take care of that.
Financial Aid will not disburse any grant funds until around June 12, and notifications about approvals or denials will not go out until approximately the same time. Watch your Tech email account for notices pertaining to these grants. You can also check on AcademicWorks to ensure you’ve completed the process – the application button for this grant will have a green check in the circle. In addition, the system issues an automatic email noting when you’ve completed the application process.
If you are awarded a summer grant and are set up for electronic deposit, the funds will posted to your student account and then be electronically deposited June 12 or after depending on the date of the notice of award. If you are only enrolled in second summer session courses, funds will not disburse until after second session courses begin.
And, it’s not too late to enroll for Summer School!
Lambright Sports and Wellness Center
I know many of you will be happy to hear that the Lambright Sports and Wellness Center is scheduled to reopen June 15. The Center, which has been closed since mid-March, will have new policies in place to protect students, Center staff, and members. The Center will be open from 5-9 a.m. and from 4-8 p.m. to allow for thorough cleaning and sanitizing of the facility during the time it is closed.
I encourage you to review either this Louisiana Tech news story or the video Lambright staff made so that you can familiarize yourself with the policies. They’re all designed to keep us healthy and safe while we provide a space for our Tech Family and community members to enjoy summer recreation.
Black Lives Matter march
Finally, today I’d like to commend our student leadership for organizing Thursday’s march to remember George Floyd. In particular, Skylar Dean worked to bring together community members from throughout the parish, and I believe this event is one in a series that will help bring change.
Now, our main focus continues to be listening to our Black students, faculty, and staff about their needs. I want to hear what the members of our Tech Family think is most important – the changes that we need to make at our University and in our city.
Let’s all continue to engage – to listen and learn from our fellow Bulldogs. When we take action on those learnings, I know that will bring the positive change needed in our community and nation.
Have a great and restful weekend, Tech Family.
