Special Education: Visually Impaired (MAT)

Gain the skills to educate and empower blind or low vision students

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Special Education: Visually Impaired prepares educators to meet the unique learning needs of individuals who are blind or have low vision in both general and specialized classroom settings. This graduate-level program equips teachers with specialized knowledge in visual impairment, accessibility tools, and inclusive instructional strategies. A foundational requirement of the program is mastery of reading and writing Unified English Braille, which all candidates must demonstrate prior to student teaching. Designed for individuals seeking initial certification or career advancement in special education, this program also explores the impact of societal attitudes and expectations on educational outcomes. Graduates are prepared to serve as thoughtful advocates and effective instructors for students with low vision across diverse educational environments.
