Elizabeth Matthews, Ph.D., A.M.ASCE is Professor of Civil Engineering and Construction Engineering Technology at Louisiana Tech University. She received her PhD in Engineering Science from Louisiana State University in 2015. Her area of expertise is sustainable and resilient construction of structures and infrastructure. Before joining Louisiana Tech, Dr. Matthews worked as a Civil Engineer/Benefit-Cost Analyst within the FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. Prior to working for FEMA, Dr. Matthews completed a doctoral degree at Louisiana State University. Her doctoral research focused on developing methodologies for quantifying environmental impacts of flood and wind repairs to a single-family residential building. The methodologies developed helped to identify resilient design choices that could help reduce building life-cycle environmental impacts. Dr. Matthews completed a master’s degree at Louisiana Tech University, which included research that helped to identify flood impacts to buried infrastructure. She also has experience with the U.S. Army as a civil engineer working on public works projects. She is currently leading a funded project through the Trenchless Technology Research Center at Louisiana Tech, aimed at evaluating air pollution and worker safety on cured-in-place pipe projects.
