Several fourth-year Louisiana Tech University Architecture students competed in the Gulf Coast Green Conference Student Competition in Houston in April. The competition challenged students of all fields to design for the conference theme, Cycle: Where Ends Become Beginnings. Five finalists, including teams from Texas A&M and Prairie View A&M, were selected to present at the conference.

Louisiana Tech students presented projects developed in their Winter Quarter sustainability studio, which challenged them to create environmentally-focused designs sited in Detroit.

Tech teams took home the top two awards. Juan Colorado, Alex Gibson, and Trey Smith earned first place and a $500 prize for their project. Connor Fonseca and Kyle Kieronski placed second and received a $250 prize.

By being selected as finalists, the students were able to attend the conference to present their project and participate in the event.

“Not only did they win top honors in the competition, but they were also able to take part in conference sessions, network with architects, and learn from their fellow competitors,” said Louisiana Tech Architecture Program Chair Kevin J. Singh. “Overall, it was a great learning experience for these students.”

“It was an honor to help represent Louisiana Tech University at the Gulf Coast Green Student Competition,” said members of the winning team. “This competition has opened our eyes to the potential that architecture has to revitalize communities, turn waste into resources, and generate opportunity. We appreciate our professors and classmates who supported us through the design process.”
