Louisiana Tech University's College of Engineering and Science recently celebrated the opening of the Smoak Power Laboratory with a ribbon-cutting ceremony recognizing the generosity of three electrical engineering alumni whose family connection to the University spans two generations.

The laboratory in Nethken Hall was made possible through contributions from Malcolm Smoak, a 1984 electrical engineering graduate, and his sons Brandon Smoak (’10) and Brad Smoak (’12). All three are professional engineers.

The contribution reflects the crucial role education and loyalty has played for generations of the Smoak family, beginning with a father's determination to create greater opportunities through engineering. Their investment in Louisiana Tech carries that commitment forward by supporting future generations of engineering students.

Creation of the Smoak Power Lab included a complete remodel of existing electrical engineering lab space in Nethken Hall and all-new technology and equipment. The renovations build on more than $2 million of improvements made to College of Engineering and Science facilities in Bogard and Nethken Halls, ensuring premier learning opportunities for students for years to come.

The plaque commemorating the laboratory recognizes the Smoak family’s generosity and legacy at Louisiana Tech’s College of Engineering and Science:
