What is Federal Financial Aid?

Federal financial aid at Louisiana Tech University is composed of the following: These are grant programs:

  • Pell Grant – are usually awarded to undergraduate students who display an exceptional financial need and have not earned a bachelor’s, graduate, or professional degree.
  • Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (SEOG) – are awarded by the institution’s Office of Financial Aid to students who display an exceptional financial need.
  • Federal Work-Study (FWSP) – The work-study program requires that the student earn the money allocated on the offer before it is paid. It cannot be used to cover initial charges for enrollment.
  • Direct Stafford Loans
    • Stafford subsidized (US Gov pays interest while in school)
    • Stafford unsubsidized (Student pays interest while in school)
    • Parents Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS)

(The above loan programs should be used responsibly. Funds borrowed from these programs must be repaid.)

Rights and Responsibilities of Receiving Financial Aid

Student Complaint/Grievance Process

Financial aid recipients have the right to file a complaint or grievance if the student is not satisfied with the services or treatment received from the Office of Financial Aid.

The complaint process must proceed as follows:

Step 1: You may file a written complaint with the Financial Aid Director via mail or email. If after speaking with the Financial Aid Director, you are not satisfied with the service you receive you may choose to file an additional complaint via Step 2.

Step 2: You may file a written complaint with the Dean of Student Services and Academic Support via mail or email. If after speaking with the Dean, you are not satisfied with the service you received you may choose to file an additional complaint via Step 3.

Step 3: You may file a written complaint with the University President via mail or email. If after speaking with the President, you are not satisfied with the service you received you may choose to file an additional complaint via Step 4.

Step 4: You may file your written complaint with the Louisiana Board of Regents and/or the U.S. Department of Education.
