The Louisiana Tech University School of Design (SOD) is a place for individuals who
embrace the challenge of creative problem solving and of making things well. As a
community to support the development of future artists, designers and architects,
the SOD creates opportunities to learn the art, the craft and the ethical practice
of being a professional artist, designer and citizen of the contemporary world. Mentored
by a diverse faculty who are active as professional artists, designers, architects
and scholars, the SOD seeks to prepare students to pursue their work with focus, creativity
and purpose.
The SOD is composed of four programs:
Architecture
Graphic Design

Studio Art
The SOD offers undergraduate degrees in Architectural Studies (BSAS), Interior Design
(BID), Studio Art (BFA) and Graphic Design (BFA). Additionally, the School offers
graduate degrees in Studio Art (MFA), Photography (MFA), Graphic Design (MFA) and
Architecture (MARC). Each degree program is accredited by its national accreditation
body for its fullest term.
Undergraduate Degrees
The Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies (BSAS) at Louisiana Tech University
offers a hands-on, comprehensive education in architecture, combining studio learning,
technical skills, and critical inquiry. Students gain core knowledge in design, history,
structures, environmental systems, and digital technologies, guided by experienced
faculty.
The BSAS serves as the pre-professional foundation for Louisiana Tech’s NAAB-accredited
Master of Architecture (M.Arch), leading toward licensure and professional practice.
It’s ideal for students passionate about the built environment and seeking to explore
how buildings are designed, constructed, and experienced.
The BFA in Graphic Design at Louisiana Tech prepares students to become skilled, thoughtful
visual communicators through a hands-on, studio-based approach. Students build a foundation
in design theory, visual aesthetics, and communication strategies while mastering
professional tools and technologies.
Courses cover branding, typography, motion graphics, and digital interfaces, helping
students think critically, solve problems visually, and create effective work. Small
classes and active faculty provide personalized guidance and portfolio development.
The program emphasizes real-world experience, preparing graduates to adapt and succeed
in the fast-moving creative industry.
The Bachelor of Interior Design at Louisiana Tech University is a CIDA-accredited
professional degree that emphasizes how space functions as well as how it looks. Rooted
in design thinking and problem-solving, the program prepares students to create environments
that enhance how people live, work, and interact.
Students study light, form, material, color, and circulation while gaining skills
in drafting, 3D modeling, building systems, and human-centered design. With studio-based
learning, experienced faculty, and a focus on both creativity and technical skill,
graduates leave with strong portfolios and a clear path into the profession.
The Studio Art BFA at Louisiana Tech is a NASAD-accredited program for students who
want to develop their creativity and technical skills for a career in the visual arts.
The curriculum begins with drawing, design, and color theory, then expands into painting,
ceramics, photography, illustration, sculpture, printmaking, and digital media.
With guidance from practicing artists, students refine their skills, explore personal
interests, and build a cohesive body of work. The program culminates in a senior exhibition
that prepares graduates for careers as artists, designers, educators, or for further
study in the arts.
Louisiana Tech’s Bachelor of Science in Scientific Visual Communication combines art
and science through the Visual Integration of Science Through Art Center. This degree
prepares students for careers in medical illustration, scientific visualization, biomedical
animation, and digital communication—fields that require both creativity and technical
skill.
Building on minors like pre-medical illustration, the program offers a focused curriculum
for students passionate about making science clear and compelling. Graduates are equipped
to create impactful visuals that bridge the gap between science and storytelling.
The Master of Architecture (M.Arch) at Louisiana Tech University is a NAAB-accredited
professional degree that prepares students for architectural practice and licensure.
Building on a pre-professional foundation, the program emphasizes advanced design
synthesis, critical thinking, and integration across systems, structure, technology,
and practice.
A year-long comprehensive studio challenges students to develop a major project that
balances conceptual vision with technical precision and real-world context. With close
faculty mentorship and a curriculum modeled on contemporary practice, graduates leave
with strong portfolios, professional readiness, and the skills to contribute from
day one.
The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) at Louisiana Tech University is a NASAD-accredited,
60-hour terminal degree for artists and designers seeking to refine their practice
and creative voice. Students concentrate in Graphic Design, Photography, or Studio
Art, with opportunities to explore painting, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, digital
media, and mixed media.
The program emphasizes intensive studio practice, critical inquiry, and professional
development. With private studio space, close faculty mentorship, group critiques,
and seminars, students build a strong body of work while engaging with cultural and
theoretical contexts. Graduates leave prepared for careers as practicing artists,
designers, or educators.
