Feb 2, 2010 | General News

Louisiana Tech has planned a workshop for junior and senior high school students and band directors who are interested in learning more about the horn, trombone and tuba.

The event, the 2010 Horn, Trombone and Tuba Day, will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20 in Howard Auditorium, Center for the Performing Arts.

Participants will have a chance to receive tips and advice as well as take part in ensemble rehearsals and listen to a mini-recital given by guest artists and members of Tech’s faculty. Those slated to perform include Dr. Joe Alexander, Tech’s low brass teacher since 2001; Ben Polk, a bass trombonist with the Baton Rouge Symphony and Acadiana Symphony as well as a tenor trombonist with the Monroe Symphony; and Dr. Bruce Atwell, who has performed throughout the United States and Europe as an orchestral musician and soloist.

Those wishing to attend the event should contact Dr. Randall Sorensen, coordinator of music who holds the James Alvey Smith Endowed Professorship, at (318) 257-5473 or sorensen@latech.edu. Friday, Feb. 12 is the registration deadline. After that, people should call to check to see if space is available. Registration costs $25 and includes lunch and a T-shirt.
