Faculty and teaching fellows from Louisiana Tech’s National Science Foundation (NSF) GK12 program ,Creating Connections, will be attending the Graduate Teaching Fellows in K-12 Education (GK-12) annual meeting, March 26-28 in Washington, D.C.
Louisiana Tech will be represented by Project Director Dr. David K. Mills, Creating Connections Outreach Director and PhD candidate in engineering Katie Bearden, and Teaching Fellows James Elliot and Lisa James, both PhD candidates in computational analysis and modeling.
The GK12 program, managed by NSF’s Division of Graduate Education, provides funding to graduate students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines to acquire the necessary skills that will broadly prepare them for professional and scientific careers in the 21st century.
As graduate students, the program participants bring their cutting-edge research and practice into the K-12 classroom. They gain skills that enable them to explain science to people of all ages, ranging from students to teachers. The graduate students also inspire transformation in the K-12 formal and informal learning environments and stimulate interest in science and engineering among students and teachers.
The team will have several opportunities to disseminate program activities developed for middle and high school students and teachers in northern Louisiana.
James will present her STEM research and its integration into the K12 classroom at NSF on Friday, March 26. Her poster, “Modeling and Control Strategies for Flexible Wing Micro Air Vehicles” will be presented from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 pm in the NSF Atrium, and will be viewed by NSF Program Officers and Administrators.
Louisiana Tech’s GK12 program will also present two program posters that describe how it creates an active learning environment in which teachers and their students are exposed to bionano- and nanotechnology research, state-of-the-art equipment, entrepreneurship and technology transfer.
On Sunday, March 28, the entire team will lead a workshop titled, Louisiana Tech’s Creating Connections NSF GK12 Program: Mechanisms for Introducing Research into the K-12 Classrooms.
