Simmons to speak in South Carolina
A Louisiana Tech endowed professor will speak at the annual banquet of the prestigious Winyah Indigo Society in Georgetown, S.C.
Dr. Rick Simmons, director of the Center for Academic and Professional Development and the George K. Anding Endowed Professor of English, was invited to speak about his most recent book, “Defending South Carolina’s Coast: The Civil War from Georgetown to Little River” on May 7 at the banquet.
The Winyah Indigo Society is one of the nation’s oldest organizations, formed in 1740 by South Carolina planters of rice and indigo. Past speakers at the annual meeting have included Ted Turner, Sen. Lindsay Graham, Sen. Glenn McConnell, Congressman Arthur Ravenel, Sen. Strom Thurmond, Medal of Honor recipient MG Jim Livingston, astronaut Frank Culbertson and financier Mack Whittle.
Simmons’ third book, “A Hidden History of the Grand Strand,” will be released by The History Press in June 2010.
