Students, professor participate in NewsTrain management session
Three Louisiana Tech students serving on the student newspaper, The Tech Talk, and a journalism instructor gained additional knowledge of practical applications of management for print and digital newsrooms at the Associated Press Managing Editors’ NewsTrain workshop.
Those who attended the workshop, held at Texas Christian University in Ft. Worth, were Taylor Stephens, a junior from Bossier City, who serves as managing editor; Amy Olita, a senior from Shreveport, who serves as editor-in-chief; Sarah Brown, a junior from Madisonville, who serves as sports editor; and Judith Roberts, instructor of journalism and senior writing associate. They, along with newsroom editors and other journalism educators around the region gained valuable information on becoming effective editors and leaders, writing techniques, new media technologies, and newsroom procedures and management skills.
“We had a great opportunity to listen to experienced news professionals and gain insight from their experience and expertise,” said Roberts, who attended the workshop through a McCormick Foundation Award. “Our students were excited to attend and eager to put into practice what they learned.”
Guest speakers from the event included Marci Burdick, senior vice president for Schurz Communications; Michael Roberts, a newsroom trainer and consultant for news organizations throughout the U.S. and Canada, Melinda Janik, CFO and senior vice president of GateHouse Media, and Mitch Pugh, editor of The Sioux City Journal in Iowa.
