Art faculty, students explore projects, receive feedback, attend lectures at SPE
Fifteen Louisiana Tech students, three alumni, four faculty members and a former Tech faculty member gathered together for fun and learning at the Society for Photographic Education conference held recently in Atlanta.
The participants attended multiple lectures and visited a Henri Cartier-Bresson exhibition at the High Museum along with an SPE Women’s Caucus Exhibition featuring former Tech faculty member Joy Christiansen Erb.
Also, assistant professor of art Jes Schrom was able to discuss an NPR flux project, which presents temporary public art throughout Atlanta, she is conducting with Anne Archer Dennington, executive director of the public arts organization, Flux Projects.
“Right now, I have five secret gathering boxes up at various venues around the city that are collecting anonymous secrets from people in Atlanta,” Schrom said. “In late May (or) early June, I will take all of the collected secrets and transfer them multiple times to approximately 4,000 paper towels that will then be dispersed throughout the city in public restrooms for people to encounter randomly. This should happen in August or September.”
The mission of flux, Schrom said, is to bring artwork to the people of Atlanta while they go through their everyday lives in places that they may not expect.
Additionally, assistant art professor Jay Gould and alumnus Andy Bloxham each served on a panel lecture at the conference, and Frank Hamrick, an assistant professor of art, reviewed student portfolios. Students and alumni also had their portfolios reviewed by professionals from around the country.
