Louisiana Tech’s ‘Tech Express’ debit card program goes off-campus
Louisiana Tech University students, faculty and staff now have the ability to use their Tech Express campus debit and ID cards to pay for goods and services provided by a number of merchants in and around Ruston.
The university has partnered with “UGryd,” a division of the CBORD Group, Inc., to provide local retailers with the technology and support needed to accept the campus-issued cards as a secure form of payment. Tech Express accounts are pre-paid accounts that can be accessed via the student or employee ID card for certain campus goods and services.
“The off campus expansion allows our students to utilize their Tech Express funds for not only our Tech campus services but for needed purchases and services in the community,” said Lisa Cole, comptroller for Louisiana Tech.
Since the 1990s, students and employees of Louisiana Tech have used the Tech Express cards for on-campus services such as dining, textbooks and office supplies. With increases in student enrollment and the expansion of the campus toward downtown Ruston, interest among the campus community in using their Tech Express cards at off-campus locations has grown significantly.
As a Tech Express partner, local business will receive daily settlement of funds via ACH, website access to real-time transaction activity and end-of-month statements, a state-of-the-art transaction processing terminal, and 24/7 technical support. A nominal transaction fee will be assessed to the merchant for each transaction that takes place as part of the program.
Cole says the initial phase of the program has over 25 participating merchants – a record start for a UGryd program. UGryd usually starts with five to 10 participating merchants, but decided to include more due to the amazing response from the Ruston community.
“We anticipate that this partnership will provide enhanced services to our students and employees, and will enhance the relationship between the University and the business community,” Cole said.
Initial implementation of the program will take place on a limited-basis and involve retailers that have previously expressed an interest in taking part in this partnership or those that have been identified by Louisiana Tech students and/or employees.
The CBORD Group is a leading provider of campus and cashless card systems, food and nutrition service management software, nationwide student discount and off-campus commerce programs, housing and judicial process management software, and integrated security solutions.
